Born in Tunisia to French parents, in 1911 he settled with his family in Paris. At the age of 14, against the advice of his parents, he decided to stop his studies and joined Renault as an apprentice turner. At seventeen he joined the Navy, where he remained for about six years, painting in his spare time. He then returned to Renault as a technician until 1932. The same year he met Edouard Pignon, was influenced by him and, from 1937, decided to dedicate himself to painting full-time.
In 1940 he befriended some young painters of the "Groupe de la jeune peinture" including Borés, Gischia, Manessier, Le Moal, Tailleux, Tal Coat and participated in the extraordinary pictorial effervescence that characterized the war years. During this time he befriended Picasso, whom he admired greatly.
From 1944 he participated in the Salon d'Automne and the following year in the Salon des Indépéndants.
Burtin’s first exhibition takes place at the Galerie Denise René in Paris on the occasion of the exhibition "History of a painting" organized in 1945 by André Lhote for young artists. The same year he exhibited at the Galerie Visconti, where Frank Elgar had brought together the most artistically gifted artists of the new generation.
In 1946 he had his first solo show at the Galerie Vendôme in Paris, where he also established himself as a draughtsman; on this occasion the State bought him a painting. Burtin has now freed himself from the influence of Matisse that threatened to limit him.
In 1947 his second solo show took place at the Galerie de France in Paris; he participated in the group exhibition "Peintres d'Aujourd'hui" with the artists Borés, Le Moal, Gischia, Desnoyer, Dayez, Lapicque, Pignon, Tal Coat and others; the same year he exhibited at the exhibition "Jeunes Peintres de l'Ecole de Paris" at the Galerie Moos in Geneva and at the "French Art Exhibition" in Dublin, at the Victor Waddington Gallery, together with Rouault, Matisse, Picasso, Beaudin, Lapicque, Manessier, Pignon, De Staël, etc. At the end of the same year he participated in the exhibition "Le nouvel Art français" in Luxembourg and his work Still life with pipe was purchased for the Luxembourg Museum.
In 1952 Burtin took part in an important charity exhibition at the Palais de New York in Paris, entitled "Transposition poétique", to which Léger, Laurens, Le Moal, Manessier, Pignon, Szobel and Mouly also exhibited.
Another one-man show takes place at the Galerie Da Silva in Marseille. Burtin has been working on ceramics for a few months now and is exhibiting them along with his paintings.
In 1953 he participated in the Salon des Peintres de leur Temps and in 1956 he was present at the "Exposition d'art français contemporain" in Marseille, in the company of Picasso, Léger and the best contemporary artists.
The following year he held a personal exhibition at the Galerie Berri-Lardy in Paris. The theme of the paintings on display was the Japanese gardens. On "Combat" a review is published that says: "It is a hymn to color the work of Marcel Burtin that makes its reappearance after a few years of silence, a spark of a thousand fires. In the dynamic and highly colored compositions where the motif is so to speak vanished, submerged, it expresses a joy of painting in front of which one does not remain insensitive. Risking falling into the decorative, Burtin proves to be able to justify the format of his canvases and to achieve a plastic synthesis where all the superfluous is removed".
