Andre' Cottavoz
Saint-Marcellin, Francia, 1922 - 2012
Andre Cottavoz was a French painter of the Paris School. He paints nudes, landscapes inspired by Tuscany and the Alps, views of Lyon and beaches with thick and full-bodied matter. He exhibited at the Salons of Paris: Tuileries, de Mai, Comparaison, Automne. He is also present at the Ecole de Paris exhibitions and is a skilled illustrator of literary works. The style of Cottavoz is characterized by the use of pasta in the colors of the earth, which is perfectly in the tradition of the Lyon school.
He attended the Lyon School of Fine Arts. After the war he spent in a work camp in Austria where he painted in rare moments of freedom, he showed his studies and drawings to Alexandre Garbell, who urged him to continue. Having little means of subsistence, he accepted a job with the potters of Vallauris. His first exhibition took place in 1946 at the Galerie Michaux in Paris. He met Picasso who encouraged him. At the Salon des Moins de Trente Ans in 1947 he exhibited a View of the Place d'Ivry and in 1948 Notre Dame de Paris. In 1950 and from 1951 to 1961 he participated in the Salon de la Jeune Peinture. He greatly admired the work of Bonnard, Marquet, Pougny, Soutine, Derain and de Staël. In 1949 he won a scholarship to the Prix National de Peinture; in 1950 he was awarded a prize at the Menton Biennale and in 1953 he received the First Prize Fénéon, ex-aequo with Jean Fusaro. The same year he signed a contract with the Galerie Art Vivant in Paris, which organized several solo exhibitions.
