Alphonse Leon Quizet
Parigi, 1885 - 1955
He is the painter of Paris now gone, that of the old neighborhoods, of the deserted alleys, of the steep steps of the Butte. He often painted Le Moulin de la Galette, the Basilica of the Sacred Heart, the fortifications. Quizet only paints places where human presence is banished.
Already as a child he felt a strong passion for drawing that led him to attend the Louvre rather than school. He began to paint seriously from 1903 by exhibiting at the Salons of Paris: Salon de la Societé Nationale des Beaux-Arts, des Indépendants, d'Automne. He lives in Montmartre and is a friend of Utrillo, Valtat and Leprin, who spur their artistic journey.

While his friend Utrillo depicts popular life, Quizet only paints places where human presence is banished. It prefers the ranges in the colors of earth and ocher, spread out in a fluid way, underlined by thick black strokes. Together with his Norwegian painter friend Heyerdahl, who lives in an atelier in Bateau-Lavoir, he rented a small garden near the Moulin de la Galette to be used as an atelier. He often attends the cabaret "Lapin Agile" and exposes some canvases. At the Salon de la Societé Nationale des Beaux-Arts, one of his paintings was bought by the collector Olivier Senn (later transferred to the Musée du Luxembourg).
In 1921 he exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants and the Salon d'Automne. Through Signac he came into contact with the merchants of the Galerie Marseille who gave him the opportunity to present the works to the public. In this period he lives in Belleville and the atelier, small, bright and very tidy, is set up in the attic of the house.
In 1943 he made five large decorative panels for the wedding hall of the town hall of Pré-Saint-Gervais and a large panel for an exhibition at the Volnay circle with Le rendez-vous de Chasse. The Galerie G. Denis in Paris organized an exhibition for him in 1945 and Mac Orlan wrote the introduction to the catalogue of his works.
The Musée du Petit Palais in Geneva organised a major retrospective in 1976.
Quizet’s fame has been on the rise for some years, giving him a prominent place in 20th century French painting, between Segonzac and Utrillo.
